I recently had the opportunity to join the Quilliam Brothers on a road trip from Newcastle to The Grove, Montenegro, traversing 9 countries in the process. Here are some (okay, a lot) of my favourite pictures from Rothenberg, Germany; Bled, Slovenia; Dubrovnik, Croatia; and Stari Bar in Montenegro.
Matt and Marion had a wedding of two’s. Naturally there’s two people getting married; naval officer Matthew Rees and his beautiful bride, Sophrology practicioner, Marion Beauregard. But, as you may have guessed from her name, Marion is French, so there were also two nationalities present as Marion’s friends and family from across the Channel came over to Plymouth to celebrate.
Holly is another first time model and I do hope she goes on to do more modelling because she is absolutely beautiful. I got lucky with Holly, I’d run into her on the street and given her a card and then, when I was desperate to fill a slot at short notice due to a model cancelling on me, I discovered a message from Holly in my Facebook account. I contacted her and she agreed to come in. Click through to see the results, you won’t be disappointed!
I recently bought the Alien Bees ABR800 ring flash and I’ve been dying to do a glamour shoot with it so I can put it through it’s paces. I’ve been trying to persuade Kris to come in and shoot with me since before the ring flash was a thought in my head, so it was nice that she eventually relented just in time for me to get the ring flash on!
In case you don’t know, a ring flash puts out a very flattering, almost shadowless light, which is perfect for doing nudes and glamour photo-shoots. Kris has a lot of nice tattoos and she’s a simply beautiful girl, so dive in and have a look at what we created.
Whether it’s a surprise party for your husband or a tender moment shared between your child and his puppy, it’s easy enough to capture familiar experiences with a DSLR or a great point and shoot camera like the Ricoh GR, but what about taking photos of your local scene?
This year I was lucky enough to be invited to photograph the Positive Solutions National Partners Forum, which was held in one of Newcastle-Gateshead’s most prestigious conference venues: The Sage Gateshead.
The forum, which is held annually, centres around the conference programme at the Sage, featuring speakers from the forefront of the financial advice sector, as well as a guest speaker; and is followed by a Gala Dinner and some entertainment – this year in the form of some well known stand up comedians.
Custom Coats are a Newcastle based company who are making the city look a little bit sexier, one car at a time! They can repair paintwork and bodywork, tint your windows and lights, powder coat your rims and valet your vehicle but what they specialize in is Vinyl Wraps.
Okay, we all know it’s tough out there at the minute; it’s tough for most everybody. What does that mean as to you as a photographer? Well it means you have to work a little harder to keep the work coming in and you have to look for opportunities to maximise your earning potential from any given job.
Exploring ‘alternative revenue streams’ for your images is something you’ll hear a lot about on business blogs etc and it is good practice whatever the state of the economy – but I rarely see any nuts-and-bolts examples of how it’s done, so that’s what I want to do today. I’m going to reference a job I did recently and show you how I maximised the income potential of that job.

Are you ready for some more excellent festival photography from the North East’s premier music festival? You are? Good, because that’s what we have here: photographs from Evolution Festival Day 2, Monday June 3rd 2012.
I was stationed up at the Ballast Hills Stage, concentrating on the DJ’s but I’ve always struggled to make an interesting picture out of some bloke twisting knobs, and with the likes of Noah & The Whale and Deadmau5 headlining on the main stage, I made it my mission to cover as many acts on the Spillars stage as I could without missing my allotted DJ’s.
My Facebook fans have been asking to see more pictures from the Evolution 2012 Festival (the premier summer festival in Newcastle upon Tyne, in case you didn’t know), so without further ado, here is a comprehensive set of pictures from Day 1: Sunday June 2nd. I was stationed at Spillers Stage (the main stage), with Maximo Park and Dizzee Rascal Headlining.
As usual, you can click on the image to see it full size and, once you’ve done that you can use the arrows to scroll through in order.
As usual, you get a first look at the photo’s from Evolution Festival, right here, straight from the horses mouth, so to speak! With headliners Dizzee Rascal and Deadmau5 pulling in a huge crowd, this was a festival not to be missed.
These are SOOC shots (straight out of camera) with no editing done as yet but I just wanted to give you a taste of Evolution 2012, Newcastle’s biggest festival. As official photographer I have access to all areas, so stay tuned to my blog to see more pictures later in the week (when I’ve sorted through them properly and edited them).
Val & Larry were re-married on the 29th of March, 2012 amidst the beautiful grounds of Close House, near Heddon-on-the-Wall.
As they’ve been down the aisle together before, they didn’t want a ceremony filled with pomp and circumstance but rather a fun and relaxed celebration spent with some of their closest friends and family in pleasant surroundings – and with plenty of food and drink to go around!
Val must have been practicing her Sun-Salutations before the big day as the weather was uncharacteristically glorious (for March in Newcastle) and really made it easy to enjoy the beautiful country surroundings and decadent interiors of Close House.
This is a tutorial on how to be a good conference photographer and by that I don’t just mean how to take good conference photographs! So, before I get into the nuts and bolts of how to do it, I think it’s important to say something about what sort of person you need to be in order to consider marketing yourself at this niche.
Like most photographers, a conference photographer must have a good eye for composition. Like any corporate event photographer, a conference photographer must be able to predict when will be the best moment to press the shutter.
There are however, a few more subtle skills and personality traits that are necessary if you truly want to become a great conference photographer.

Now, you may spot the inherent problem with a professional photographer trying to answer the question ‘why hire a professional photographer?’ – I can hardly give an unbiased answer, eh?! However, I’d like to counter with – who better to answer that question? Only a professional photographer knows all the little things he/she does to deliver great service and great images to the client – that’s what makes us professionals after all! So who better to help you decide if it’s worth hiring a pro or giving the job to an enthusiast?
For the record, it’s not always the best idea to hire a professional. We all started out as enthusiasts and proved our ground shooting for friends and family or picking up low budget jobs. There are some gigs that are simply better suited for your Uncle Steve or to that friend of a friend who’s studying photography at college. And then there are some jobs where you’re just not sure whether to fawk out for a pro or not.
This post is aimed at helping you make the best decision for your needs.
Halloween is probably the best time to be an event photographer. I love photographing all the different Halloween costumes and the whole fancy dress aspect just seems to put everyone in a party mood. This year I photographed three Halloween parties in one night and this post has some of my favourite pictures from Krash’s Monsters Ball at Venue, Dragnet’s Halloween Mutant Shakedown at theCUT and Fresh Element’s Fright Night at the Baltic Art Gallery.
So, check out some of the great Halloween costumes and enjoy the pictures and Happy Halloween everyone! Continue reading
