Val & Larry were re-married on the 29th of March, 2012 amidst the beautiful grounds of Close House, near Heddon-on-the-Wall.

Val & Larry's wedding was a beautiful day in beautiful surroundings.

As they’ve been down the aisle together before, they didn’t want a ceremony filled with pomp and circumstance but rather a fun and relaxed celebration spent with some of their closest friends and family in pleasant surroundings – and with plenty of food and drink to go around!

Val must have been practicing her Sun-Salutations before the big day as the weather was uncharacteristically glorious (for March in Newcastle) and really made it easy to enjoy the beautiful country surroundings and decadent interiors of Close House.

Conference Photography – A Tutorial

This is a tutorial on how to be a good conference photographer and by that I don’t just mean how to take good conference photographs! So, before I get into the nuts and bolts of how to do it, I think it’s important to say something about what sort of person you need to be in order to consider marketing yourself at this niche.

Like most photographers, a conference photographer must have a good eye for composition. Like any corporate event photographer, a conference photographer must be able to predict when will be the best moment to press the shutter.

There are however, a few more subtle skills and personality traits that are necessary if you truly want to become a great conference photographer.

Why Hire A Professional Photographer?

Daniel Romani - funny self portrait | Subtle sensor PhotographyNow, you may spot the inherent problem with a professional photographer trying to answer the question ‘why hire a professional photographer?’ – I can hardly give an unbiased answer, eh?! However, I’d like to counter with – who better to answer that question? Only a professional photographer knows all the little things he/she does to deliver great service and great images to the client – that’s what makes us professionals after all! So who better to help you decide if it’s worth hiring a pro or giving the job to an enthusiast?

For the record, it’s not always the best idea to hire a professional. We all started out as enthusiasts and proved our ground shooting for friends and family or picking up low budget jobs. There are some gigs that are simply better suited for your Uncle Steve or to that friend of a friend who’s studying photography at college. And then there are some jobs where you’re just not sure whether to fawk out for a pro or not.

Halloween is probably the best time to be an event photographer. I love photographing all the different Halloween costumes and the whole fancy dress aspect just seems to put everyone in a party mood. Photo Gallery: Embleton Bay & Dunstanburgh Castle Photos

It’s so rare these days that I get to take photos just for personal pleasure. It’s funny because that’s  what got me into the photography business in the first place – I enjoy making beautiful landscape and architecture pictures and wanted to make money doing something I enjoy.

Nowadays, my aim is to make enough money with my corporate events photography business to allow me the time to shoot what I enjoy when I’m not working. We’re having such beautiful weather in the North east at the moment that you wouldn’t think it was autumn, so I took advantage of a free afternoon and went with my friend Mariella to take some pictures of Dunstanburgh Castle and the nearby Embleton Bay on the Northumberland coast line.

Thoughts on the Sigma/Foveon DSLR’s – Not an SD1 review!

With the recent release of the Sigma SD1, I thought it might be a good time to share my experience of Sigma DSLR’s for anyone who may be thinking of buying one or switching systems entirely.

I don’t own an SD1, nor have I tried one but in the past and this is not a review. However, I’ve owned pretty much all other Foevon sensored Sigma cameras from the SD9 & SD10 to the SD14 and the compact cameras DP1 and DP2; in fact, I still own and regularly use the Sigma DP1.

Out-takes: Grace Rutherford

I’m off on holiday to have fun in the sun for a week, so I thought I’d share something fun here so that no-one feels left out!

When I photograph models I try to keep things light and fun, so there’s always a lot of laughter on set. I keep shooting regardless because sometimes you get some gems when the model is not posing for the camera. Of course, a lot of the time you end up with shots that you just can’t use commercially. This series of out-takes from my shoot with model Grace Rutherford is something that I’m considering doing every time I photograph a new model. So watch out Newcastle models!

A shoot like this is quite challenging because we both have to work hard to create a set of very different images. And to make things even more interesting, we only had two days (one in the studio and one on location) to shoot in Newcastle before Grace had to head back down south!

Nightclub Photography – A Tutorial

Well, one of my first regular jobs as a photographer was taking photographs of drunk students in Newcastle’s nightclubs. It worked well for me because, at the time, I was also a drunk student and it meant I got to go to the clubs for free. Funky Fresh Yoga Photographs round 2: Starring Jambo -The Little Yogi

If you’ve been following my blog, then you’ll know that I’ve been doing some new promo pictures for The Little Yogi, aka Jambo Truong.

Jambo is an Integrated Health Consultant specialising in (amongst other things) Acupuncture treatments and Yoga classes. He blends Vinyasa Krama and Forrest Yoga, creating funky postures and fresh, modern yoga suitable for the Western body (and mind).

Obviously we wanted to create some images that reflect his style and, as you saw in my last post, I shot Jambo in various locations around Newcastle, which are known for their strong graffiti art. Continue reading →

The Little Yogi – Funky Fresh Yoga Pictures

If you’ve been following my tweets recently, then you’ll probably be aware that I’ve been photographing Jambo Truong of The Little Yogi. Jambo is an Integrated Health Consultant and offers a wide variety of therapies to enhance your health and wellbeing, including:

  • Acupuncture
  • Oriental Body Balance
  • Relaxation Techniques
  • Yoga Classes

He teaches several yoga classes in Newcastle, using a mixture of Forrest Yoga and Vinyasa Krama to create a style of yoga suited to the stresses experienced by modern day, Western body types.

When Jambo approached me wanting some photographs for a new promotion campaign, he said that he wanted to create some funky, fun pictures using strong yoga postures in gritty urban environments. This is what we have been working on for the last few weeks.
